In open loop flying die applications, the most consistent shearing action is typically acheived by firing the cutting tool into the material and allowing the material to drag the die up to speed. However, due to material regidity and die weight, it might not be possible to use the material to push the die to speed. Buckling or deformation of the material can sometimes occur when the die is heavy or when the material is weak. This is especially true at higher line speeds.

To overcome this limitation, a die boost - a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder - is coupled to the die. This cylinder is controlled by an on/off valve (or perhaps by a proportional valve) that is fired around the same time the press is fired.
